About Town

Moderno: Design for Living in Brazil, Mexico, and Venezuela, 1940-1978” at Americas Society
Through 05.16.15

Sheltered from the overall destruction of World War II, Brazil, Mexico, and Venezuela entered an expansive period of economic growth in the 1940s and 50s, resulting in the modernization of the city and the application of international visual vocabularies. Although the three countries had unique social, political, and economic circumstances, modernization and design were endorsed as vehicles for progress and development. Looking at the tradition of craftsman design and documenting the transition from craftsmanship to industry, “Moderno” brings together around 80 one-of-a-kind and mass-produced household objects, including furniture, ceramics, metalwork, textiles, and printed materials. Guest curated by Maria Cecilia Loschiavo dos Santos, Ana Elena Mallet, and Jorge Rivas Pérez.

Reviewing Renewal” at the Queens Museum
Through 02.08.15

596 Acres” presents all of the urban renewal plans the city has ever adopted in an intervention directly on the Panorama of the City of New York at the Queens Museum. The project realizes the online Urban Reviewer map on the 1:1200 scale of the 9,335-square-foot Panorama. The exhibition asks: What can we learn from the continuing story of urban renewal in NYC? Talks, readings, discussions, and film showings will take place every Sunday.
