Spotlight on the 2017 AIANY Design Awards Jury

Every year since the program’s inception, the AIANY Design Awards have celebrated outstanding architectural design by AIANY members and New York-based architects, as well as recognizing local work by architects from around the world. Awards are given in four categories—Architecture, Interiors, Projects, and Urban Design—as reviewed by the seven-person jury who establish criteria, evaluate excellence, and determine the awards given for Honor and Merit designations. This year, Oculus guest editor Alan Brake will serve as moderator when the jury convenes in the coming weeks.

Honor and Merit winners will be revealed at the Design Awards Jury Symposium on March 6, 2017, and further celebrated at the Honors and Awards Luncheon on April 21, 2017. Editor’s Note

The Spring season has started off with a number of openings. Last week’s Barcelona-related exhibitions “Polis: 7 Lessons from the European Prize for Urban Public Space [2000-2012],” and “Palaces for the People: Guastavino and the Art of Structural Tile” opened at the Center for Architecture and Museum of the City of New York, respectively. Join us tomorrow at the Center for Architecture for the opening of the exhibition “American Society of Landscape Architects New York Chapter 2014 Awards.”

In addition, don’t forget to reserve your seat for the AIA New York Chapter Honors and Awards Luncheon. The final reservation and payment deadline is next Wednesday, 04.09.14. We look forward to seeing you there!

Finally, please support FIGMENT NYC, the AIANY Emerging New York Architects Committee (ENYA), and the Structural Engineers Association of New York’s (SEAoNY) City of Dreams pavilion competition winner for this year, CDR Studio’s “Governor’s Cup.” The pavilion will be a serpentine canopy made out of 30,000 reclaimed plastic cups. CDR Studio has initiated a Kickstarter campaign to raise $10,000 for materials, storage, transportation, the organization of workshops and work on the island, maintenance, and disassembly. Volunteers are also welcome to sign up here.

CFAF Young Patrons Tour the Judd Foundation

On 03.26.14, the Center for Architecture Foundation Young Patrons Committee ushered in Spring with a tour of the Judd Foundation followed by a reception at Garis & Hahn Gallery on the Bowery. Despite the bitter cold, 40 attendees gathered in SoHo for a guided tour of the recently restored Judd Foundation at 101 Spring Street, the former home of the late artist Donald Judd and his family. The restoration of the five-story building, designed by Nicholas Whyte and completed in 1870, was led by Architecture Research Office/ARO with exterior restoration architect Walter B.
