Kirsten Childs

In Memoriam: Kirsten Anne Childs (1943-2016)

Kirsten Anne Childs, ASID, Director of Facilities Planning & Interior Design at Croxton Collaborative Architects, passed away on 01.13.16 following a three-year battle with cancer.

Childs began her career as an interior designer in London, where she soon became her office’s liaison to the New York office of SOM. In 1985, Childs joined Randolph Croxton, FAIA, LEED AP, in a 30-year role of collaboration and leadership in Croxton Collaborative Architects. Their early focus on green design informs all the work of the firm.

Childs’ projects, including the Audubon House Headquarters in New York City and the EPA Headquarters in Washington, DC, among many others, were foundational to green model programs such as LEED, formalizing a new greener and more sustainable design approach. Her leadership in green design is demonstrated by her involvement with AIA’s Committee on the Environment, ASID, and the US Green Building Council.

Childs was honored as the 2010 Designer of Distinction by ASID for her lifetime of contributions to the profession of interior design and to the field of sustainable design. The recognition is the highest honor that ASID bestows on one of its members.
