Canstruction NYC

On 11.14.16, New Yorkers gathered at Brookfield Place for the opening of the 2016 Canstruction exhibition of the annual food charity and design competition to benefit City Harvest. Twenty-five teams creatively stacked 100,000 unopened cans of food to create life-size sculptures that will be donated to City Harvest when the exhibition closes on 11.16.16.

A panel of esteemed jurors, including the AIANY and Center for Architecture’s Executive Director Benjamin Prosky, Assoc. AIA, selected Dattner Architects’ “Lean On Me” as Jurors’ Favorite. Other award-winners were: HOK’s helix-shaped “Twist and Shout” for Structural Integrity; Silman’s Starry Night rendition, “Vincent Can Gogh” for Best Meal; Gensler’s “What Goes Around, Cans Around” carousel for Best Use of Labels and Most Cans; Gilsanz Murray and Steficek’s groin vault, “CANctuary” for the Cheri Award, and an Honorable Mention for CAGE Consulting Engineer’s “Cut Out the Hunger.”

Don’t forget to vote for your favorite sculpture to win The People’s Choice Award!
