Heritage Ball 2010: Celebrating Leadership

10.07.10: More than 1,100 guests gathered at Chelsea Piers to celebrate design excellence at the Heritage Ball. The event, with proceeds benefiting the AIA New York Chapter and the Center for Architecture Foundation’s many initiatives, honored Vicki Match Suna, AIA, Senior Vice President and Vice Dean for Real Estate Development and Facilities at New York University Langone Medical Center (Center for Architecture Award); the Clinton Climate Initiative, a program of the William J. Clinton Foundation (Center for Architecture Foundation Award); 200 West Street Project Team (AIA New York Chapter Award); and Henry N. Cobb, FAIA, Founding Partner of Pei Cobb Freed & Partners Architect (Presidents Award).
Cobb accepted his lifetime achievement award with “three brief but memorable remarks,” that Cobb explained “have accompanied and often sustained me throughout the six decades of my professional life.” The third of these was by Claude Lévi-Strauss: “The city is both natural object and a thing to be cultivated; individual and group; something lived and something dreamed; it is the human invention, par excellence.” The 1,135 attendees responded to his remarks, and his achievement, with a standing ovation.

New International AIA Chapter Opens in the Middle East

The four international AIA chapters — the UK, Europe, Hong Kong, and Japan — can welcome a fifth chapter. The Middle East Chapter will cover architects working in Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. Architects from Gensler, FXFOWLE Architects, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, and AECOM will be on the board.

DesignVote10 Puts Architect on the Political Map

By Jay Bond, AIANY Policy Director

DesignVote10 is a non-partisan effort to mobilize architects to vote while also providing opportunities to position AIA members front-and-center on public policy issues affecting the profession in the 2010 campaign. In an effort to inform members on the results of the Rebuild & Renew legislative campaign launched in 2008, the AIA has developed an online voter guide. This guide will provide pertinent information to voters on legislation that impacts architects and the built environment. Don’t forget to vote on November 2!

CFAF Looks to Green Future of the Empire State

On 10.07.10, visitors toured the Empire State Building with the Center for Architecture Foundation, the Clinton Climate Initiative, and other leaders from the skyscraper’s green retrofit team, which includes Johnson Controls, Inc., Jones Lang LaSalle, the Rocky Mountain Institute, and the Empire State Building Company. The tour explored the restoration of the ground floor, which is an interior landmark, a model energy-efficient office, the Skanska offices, the tourist staging areas, and the building’s mechanical systems.

The team built an in-house windows workshop to glaze the 20-year-old windows in the building. Inserting a film between the two panes of the windows achieved a similar efficiency to creating triple-pane windows. After glazing thousands of windows, the workshop was being disassembled on the day of the tour.

Key Terms Clarification Text Amendment

By Jay Bond, AIANY Policy Director

City Planning Commissioner Amanda M. Burden, FAICP, Hon. AIA, announced the beginning of public review for the Key Terms Clarification Text Amendment, a set of technical changes to the NYC Zoning Resolution designed to preserve the original intent of the zoning regulations and to clarify the meaning and usage of key terms within the regulations.

The key terms include “development” and “building,” as they are defined in the Zoning Resolution. The use of the term “development” will be clarified to mean only a new building or a new use of open land. The definition of “building” will be revised to differentiate one building from another in a way that corresponds to the intent of the City Planning Commission, the Building Code, and to a layperson’s common understanding of what differentiates two buildings that touch. The Department has referred out the citywide Key Terms Clarification text amendment for public review to all Community Board, Borough Boards, and Borough Presidents for a 60-day review period.

The full text of the amendment can be found here.

The AIANY Chapter would appreciate your feedback on the proposed changes. Please forward them to us here.
