Though Germany’s Bauhaus and the Dutch De Stijl are renowned the world over as major exponents of European Modernist design, there was a third center of avant-garde architecture that, while equally productive, has not achieved the same level of international recognition: Prague Functionalism. Starting tomorrow, 02.12.15, the Center for Architecture will present the U.S. premiere of the exhibition “Prague Functionalism: Tradition and Contemporary Echoes,” which traces the Czech city’s Modernist architecture from its roots to its influence on current projects. The exhibition presents photographs and drawings of buildings both built and unbuilt, and includes several models of historic and contemporary buildings, along with a to-scale reproduction of a 1930s minimal housing unit.
If you can’t make it to tomorrow’s opening, the exhibition will be on view through 05.23.15. You can also check the Center’s exhibition page for related programming.

About Town
“Moderno: Design for Living in Brazil, Mexico, and Venezuela, 1940-1978” at Americas Society
Through 05.16.15
Sheltered from the overall destruction of World War II, Brazil, Mexico, and Venezuela entered an expansive period of economic growth in the 1940s and 50s, resulting in the modernization of the city and the application of international visual vocabularies. Although the three countries had unique social, political, and economic circumstances, modernization and design were endorsed as vehicles for progress and development. Looking at the tradition of craftsman design and documenting the transition from craftsmanship to industry, “Moderno” brings together around 80 one-of-a-kind and mass-produced household objects, including furniture, ceramics, metalwork, textiles, and printed materials. Guest curated by Maria Cecilia Loschiavo dos Santos, Ana Elena Mallet, and Jorge Rivas Pérez.

We hope that everyone is staying nice and warm following the great snowstorm scare of 2015. Now that things are more or less back to normal, the AIA New York Chapter would like to invite you to attend the first event of a series related to the theme of AIANY 2015 President Tomas Rossant, AIA, “Dialogues from the Edge of Practice.” The theme will explore how architects are boldly enlarging the purview of the practitioner, bringing their particular critical problem-solving skills and design acumen to endeavors previously considered outside the traditional scope of practice. According to Rossant, there has never been a time when the role of the architect has been more relevant as an instrument to shape culture, society, and the environment.
On 02.02.15, “Edge Construction: The Future of Modular” will focus on how architects have pushed the boundaries of the profession into the design of alternative construction means and methods. Modular, or offsite, construction has become broadly accepted but not yet employed at a large scale. What is the future of this construction method? And, considering Mayor de Blasio’s affordable housing plan, should modular construction techniques be employed to deliver more affordable housing to the city? Join us to hear answers to these questions and more!
