2016 Architecture and Design College Fair

During the annual 2016 Architecture and Design College Fair on 11.04.16, more than 175 students and family members came to the Center for Architecture to learn about different architecture and design school options. Throughout the evening and throughout the Center, high school students had the opportunity to speak with representatives from 28 different colleges and universities from around the country.

Rather than host a large panel discussion, the Center for Architecture invited students to have personal conversations with each school regarding application requirements, portfolio review, student life, degree options, and design pedagogy. This proved to be a very valuable format, as prospective students spoke directly to current students, faculty members, and admission advisors. Some of the younger high school students in attendance were able to direct the conversation in a different way, asking questions such as, “What types of classes might be most helpful if I am interested in studying architecture?” The number of participating architecture schools has grown each year, from 12 in 2013 to 27 this year. The college fair now draws students from the surrounding region, including the Hudson Valley, Long Island, and Connecticut. The school representatives who return every year tell us how much they value the focused audience and our central location in New York City. The fair also promoted the Walter A. Hunt, Jr. Scholarship, which provides $20,000 over two years to a NYC public high school student pursuing a BArch degree. Applications for this award are due on 05.15.17.

As the exciting night came to an end, it was amazing to reflect upon the many students who showed a deep commitment to their education by attending on a Friday night. Both the college representatives and the Center for Architecture K-12 Education staff were very impressed by the energized sense of dedication. If you missed this exciting evening, we would like to invite you to the “Building Connections 2016” opening reception this Thursday, 11.10.1, 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM at the Center for Architecture. It promises to be another inspiring night, celebrating the achievements of our K-12 architecture education programs!
