On 10.23.13, the organizers of the FAR ROC: For a Resilient Rockaway gathered in Far Rockaway to unveil the winner of the design competition for the development of a resilient and sustainable community at Averne East. The winning proposal, “Small Means and Great Ends” by White Arkitekter in collaboration with Arup and Gensler, was announced by Ron Moelis, chariman and CEO of L+M Development Partners and Steven Bluestone, partner at the Bluestone Organization. During Archtober, New York City hosts a marathon of architecture and design conferences, from Architectural Record’s Innovation Conference, to the Association for Preservation Technology’s Preserving the Metropolis Annual Conference, and the Municpial Art Society’s MAS Summit for New York City. This year, the Center for Architecture joined in on conference frenzy, hosting World Architecture Day 2013 – Towards Eight Million: Housing the Next Generation on 10.07.13. Organized by World Architecture News, the conference was ensured international relevance in the architecture, planning, and design communities. Correction: In “AIANY Celebrates Design Excellence at the 2013 Honors and Awards Luncheon,” featured in e-Oculus issue 04.18.13, Medal of Honor designer João Duarte was mistakenly identified as a Brazilian sculptor, medallist, and professor.
Born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1952, João Duarte is one of Portugal’s foremost sculptors and medallists. Duarte graduated with a degree in plastic arts and sculpture from the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Lisbon in 1978, where he is now an Associate Professor. In addition to his distinguished teaching career, he has designed 47 public monuments, more than 150 medals, and 12 commemorative coins for the Portuguese Mint. Continue reading “Editor’s Note”
