2015 Oculus Editorial Calendar
The Oculus 2015 Editorial Calendar has been set. If you are an architect in practice or by training, or see yourself as an astute observer of New York’s architectural and planning scene, Oculus wants to hear from you! You may submit projects/topics from anywhere, but architects must be New York-based. Please submit story ideas/projects by the deadlines indicated below to Kristen Richards, Hon. AIA, Hon. Summer 2015: AIANY 2015 Design Awards
Submission deadline: 02.06.15

Fall 2015: “Home” (In conjunction with the Housing Exhibition + Archtober)
Housing progress report/report card: whether market rate or affordable, is it living up to our expectations for design, community integration, environmental responsiveness? For affordable and low-income housing, is innovation helping us hit the number of units New York City needs? Continuing controversy about “inclusionary” housing (80/20 and such). Off-site/modular construction. BSA Housing Awards. (To include input from social scientists, urban anthropologists, psychologists, etc.)
Deadline for story ideas, projects: 05.22.15

Winter 2015: “Makers in a Digital World” or “Architecture & the Digital World”
How we present and build what we do: 21st-century visual representation, mapping, big data. Life-cycle of a building: an idea, draw it, digitize for CNC milling machines, construct, share via Instagram, etc. Cooper-Hewitt tech “pencils”; etc.

The AIA New York Chapter, under the leadership of 2014 President Lance Jay Brown, FAIA, had a tremendously successful year. Brown’s presidential theme, “Civic Spirit: Civic Vision,” emphasized the critical role played by public space in ensuring civic engagement. As New York City enters a new era with new mayoral leadership, an expanding population, and increasing threats from climate change, our design professions face consequential civic opportunities, challenges, and responsibilities. Throughout the year, programs examined these issues and more, culminating in the Center for Architecture’s summer exhibition, “Open to the Public: Civic Space Now.”

On 12.09.14, AIANY will celebrate the achievements of 2014, and present a preview of what’s to come during the 2015 AIA New York Board Inaugural. Brown will pass the gavel to 2015 President Tomas Rossant, AIA, founding partner and design principal at Ennead Architects. Please join us as we welcome incoming board members and thank exiting members for their outstanding leadership contributions to the Chapter. A celebratory reception sponsored by IBEX Construction will follow.

Join us on Saturday, 11.15.14, for the opening of the Arch Schools 2014 exhibition and our annual “Deans’ Roundtable.” Deans from 13 area schools of architecture, including City College of New York, Columbia University, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, Cornell University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, New York Institute of Technology, Parsons the New School for Design, Pratt Institute, Princeton University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, University at Buffalo (SUNY), University of Pennsylvania, and Yale University, will discuss current directions in architectural education, with a special focus on the role of leadership.

If you can’t make it on Saturday, the Deans’ Roundtable will also be available via livestream.
